Are all Blueberries created equal? |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Much like apples and oranges, blueberries come in many varieties that exhibit different degrees of quality. This is exhibited in the color, size, firmness, shelf life, taste and most importantly, nutritional value. The blue or violet colour of the skin of the Blueberry fruit is due to organic chemicals; and the high levels of antioxidant, which derived from these, are the key to the beneficial effects of the fruit. Our mission at Fraser Valley Blueberry Farm is to provide our customers, local and distant, the best quality fresh organic Blueberries. With that goal in mind we researched for two years the varieties of Blueberries that can grow in the northwest before we planted any in our fields. We now have two patent varieties from the Michigan State University, Draper and Liberty growing in our fields. Both varieties are bred to produce outstanding berries that are light blue in colour, uniform medium sized, and are firm with crisp flesh and have sweet flavor. Post-harvest colour retention and firmness are excellent and exhibit long shelf-life. Nutritional data from the Michigan State University indicate a superior product that is high in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants which out-performs other varieties grown here in the northwest. We currently have nine thousand bushes and are planting thousands more every year so that more people can enjoy the best quality blueberries in the British Columbia. In season, July to September, you can buy from our 40 tonne annual crop, of fresh organic blueberries. And during the rest of the year you can still purchase blueberries that we freshly froze during the harvest season so you can never be out of this delicious fruit.
